The Chief of Police is the head of the Avalon Police Department and is responsible for the day to day operations and to administer and enforce rules and regulations of the Department for its efficiency.  The Chief assigns the duties and assignments of the personnel, manages the Department including purchasing equipment within budgeted resources., sets policy and procedures, issues directives and orders, attends Borough Council meetings, meets with community organizations, and delegates authority as appropriate for the efficient operation of the Department.  The Chief of Police shall exercise any and all rights, authorities, powers, and responsibilities reserved solely as set forth in NJSA 40A:14-118 and reports to Borough Council once per month.

Chief Jeff Christopher graduated from Gloucester County College with an Associate degree in Law Enforcement.  He was hired by the Avalon Police Department as a Special Class 2 Police Officer in 1997 and served in that capacity for 3 years.  He was hired as a Full-time Officer in May of 2000.  He completed the Cape May County Residential Police academy ranked # 1 in the class earning the Director’s award.   During his time in Patrol, he became a certified Drug Recognition Expert.  In 2005 he was selected to join the Cape May County SWAT team where he served for 5 years.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 2011, promoted to Captain in 2014, and promoted to Chief of Police on January 24, 2018. In 2019, Chief Christopher graduated from the New Jersey State Chief’s of Police, Command and Leadership academy.  In 2022, received status as Accredited Command Executive from the NJSACOP.
