Avalon Police to Begin Using Body Worn Cameras 02/01/2017

Avalon Police Department to Begin Using Body Worn Cameras February 1st

(Avalon, NJ)—Avalon Police Chief William McCormick announced that the Avalon Police Department will be implementing body-worn cameras on Wednesday, February 1st, 2017.  All members of the Department have been assigned the cameras; patrol officers will be wearing the cameras at all times.

“These body-worn cameras provide an additional level of safety and security for the public, and for the officers on patrol in the Borough of Avalon”, Chief McCormick said.  “These cameras have night-vision technology and the capability to accurately document activities, actions, and statements during all police contacts”.

The Avalon Police Department was able to acquire the body-worn cameras through a grant from the State of New Jersey.  They are manufactured by Pro-Vision.  The use of the cameras will conform to the policies of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, along with the policies from the Avalon Police Department.

“Body-worn cameras can serve as an unbiased witness for the courts”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi who also serves as the Director of the Avalon Department of Public Safety.  “Although cameras are not going to capture everything an officer sees, they will be valuable tools to assist in documenting events that occurs during and officer’s tour of duty”.

AVALON POLICE DEPARTMENT AGAIN ACHIEVES ACCREDITATION STATUS

Department achieves perfect inspection, accredited for the next three years

(Avalon, NJ)—The Avalon Police Department has received its second, three-year accreditation from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP).  The Department was awarded the accreditation during a meeting on Thursday, June 9th, in South Brunswick, NJ.  The Association congratulated the Borough for having a perfect inspection during a site visit in Avalon on March 21, 2016.

“The Avalon Police Department remains one of the most professional and respected public safety operations in the entire State of New Jersey”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi.  “We are extraordinarily grateful to the leadership provided by Chief William McCormick and his entire staff for their commitment to police and public safety efforts for our residents, property owners, and visitors”.

In March, a team of assessors from the Association Board came to Avalon to inspect the Avalon Police Department and reviewed standard operating procedures and all policies.  The Board determined that the Avalon Police Department had no deficiencies, and was in 100 percent compliance with all standards of the NJSACOP accreditation.

The Avalon Police Department was represented by Chief McCormick, Captain Jeff Christopher, and Sgt. John Roscoe at the final hearing before the Board.  During the hearing, the Board unanimously voted in favor of accepting the Avalon Police Department into the NJSACOP accreditation program.

The process of becoming an accredited police department is a continuous process throughout the year.  The Avalon Police Department is obligated to provide specific proof and evidence that the Department is following the guidelines of the NJSACOP accreditation as well as following its own policies and procedures.

AVALON POLICE, OFFICIALS PARTICIPATE IN 2016 POLICE UNITY TOUR

Avalon Police on Unity Tour 2016

(Avalon, NJ)—The Borough of Avalon participated in the annual Police Unity Tour as law enforcement officials bicycled from southern New Jersey to the National Law Enforcement Police Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.  The Avalon Police Department had three members of the Police Department and two volunteers from emergency services supporting the event that concluded on Friday, May 13th.

Avalon Police Department Detective Matthew Sykes, Sergeant Sean McNair, and Patrolman Tujuan Baile joined Avalon Deputy Emergency Management Coordinators Paul Short and Kevin Scarpa for the Police Unity Tour Chapter 2 which includes law enforcement personnel from the southern New Jersey region.  Sykes, McNail, and Baile rode their bicycles from New Jersey to Washington, DC to raise funding for the Museum Hall of Remembrance to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.  The Avalon Rescue Squad provided support services to the riders through the State of Maryland.

In 1999, 22 members from southern New Jersey began Chapter 2, seeing the need to expand the Unity Tour Family.  Since then, the Chapter has grown to well over 200 members.  Each year the Tour departs from a central or southern New Jersey town and continues with stops in Delaware and Maryland.  On the final day of the Tour, the Chapter merges with Chapter 1 from northern New Jersey to renew the partnership and ride together to the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, DC.
